Google Brand Studio
I believe we had reached out to you not that long ago?
After spending a year with Apple's App Store Original Content Group in Cupertino, I wanted to work remotely for a while. There were only two teams I was interested in making an exception, and the Brand Studio reached out to me before I had declared that out loud.
They had contacted me the previous year just before I was in contact with Twitter and Apple about opportunities but the timing wasn’t right until in the fall of 2019 I had just delivered a video for an installation in Nokia’s East Coast HQ and I was several months into compositing on the Oscar-nominated short film Opera.
Joining the team in January 2020, it was clear from the culture and work that I'd want to stay for a while. Then COVID happened, sending us all home. Laboring with this fantastic team has been a unique experience, which aligned with my intention to use my home studio. The work was timely and impactful.
A few caveats:
Contract Motion Designer with Google Brand Studio via Adecco.
TVC limitations balanced by fantastic early months
Creating simplified UX moments and dynamic transitions for broadcast and social campaign content.
Developing Motion Graphics Templates for internal and external content partners.
Documenting process with decks, gifs, and case films.
Hosting a variety of demos across internal teams.
Campaigns
Thank you, teachers.
Recent Google Trends Data showed a rapid increase in education-related queries in 2020. Turning these trends into films was an opportunity Brand Studio’s editorial and motion teams embraced.
From "how to teach from home" to "when can we go back to school” to “how do teachers do it,” these all-time-high trends tell the story of a renewed appreciation for educators all over the world.
This was my introduction to:
Search Queries
Always changing based on character length and most importantly data
End cards and taglines
The number of lines and line breaks can be contentious
Typography treatment exploration
most of which never goes live :)
This film was used to promote tips and tools to help ease the transition to remote learning, by driving viewers to check out the revamped Teach From Home site: g.co/teachfromhome

A CODA Story
At the 2021 Academy Awards, Google launched a campaign telling the story of how, Senior Designer at Brand Studio, Tony Lee’s family stayed connected with the help of Google’s accessible technology.
After this project, I was committed to following through on Tony’s request, which involved making it easier to generate burned-in captions. I wanted to make an impact at Google, inspired by the team and work we were doing, which was my chance.
Send me an email if you would like to know more about the Motion Graphics Template for burned-in captions.
